Peripheral nerves exist outside the brain and spinal cord. These nerves transmit sensation and motor (movement) control. They can be damaged by inflammation, tumor, trauma, surgery, scar tissue, or illness. Injecting anesthetic with or without anti-inflammatory steroids around the peripheral nerves can help reduce the inflammation and provide relief.
